Online Pokers Popularity Continues to Grow (OPN Staff)
In recent years, the popularity of online poker has grown at almost exponential rates. While a January 2003 estimate put total online poker wagers at $11.1 million, total wagers for October 2004 reached $136.1 million. 2005 gambling forecasts estimate that over $1 billion will be wagered on internet poker in the coming year. PokerPulse.com compiled the above statistics after monitoring 21 of the most heavily trafficked poker sites.
Poker Pulse has named PartyPoker.com the largest online poker site, and according to PartyPoker's general manager, the site serves up to 60,000 players at peak playing times. The vast majority of patrons are based in the U.S.
Most poker sites offer an option to gamble with play money, and do not collect any money from players who choose this option. For this reason, concerted efforts are made on the part of poker rooms to lure players into games with real wagers.
Although internet poker's popularity continues to soar, experts have predicted that its growth is approaching its peak and in upcoming years, growth rates will begin to slow.
